Brain Injuries can be called minor, moderate or severe.
Different tests done in the hospital will help to know how bad the brain injury is and how long your parent may have to stay in hospital. The worse the injury, the longer your parent will likely stay in hospital.
At the time of the injury:
When the brain injury happens, paramedics will test your parent to see if they can open their eyes, talk or move their body. Your parent will be given a score depending if they can do all, some or none of the tasks.
In hospital:
Your parent will have their memory tested if they had a donk to the head (called a Traumatic Brain Injury). It is common for people to be confused and have trouble remembering things that happen or are said. The test helps to know if your parents memory is getting better or they are less confused. It is normal for talking and behaviour to change during this time.
